HOW TO GET HERE
Lake Taupo is situated in the middle of the
North Island, and is the largest lake in the Southern
Hemisphere. Taupo is the region's main centre. It has a
stunning location - right on the shores at the Northern end of the
Lake, looking across to the snow-capped peaks of Tongariro National
Park.
Accommodation choices range from world famous lodges, hotels,
motels, home stays and tourism award winning backpacker
hostels. Just a few minutes North of Taupo at Wairakei Tourist
Park are boiling mud pools, thermal valleys, geysers and hot mineral
springs. New Zealand's most popular visitor attraction, the
spectacular Huka Falls, is right next door.
Taupo has a smorgasbord of excellent restaurants, cafes and bars,
streets of great shopping, and a distinctly cosmopolitan feel.
It's also the exhibition centre for a diverse range of beautiful
local arts and crafts.
